is it worth buying Agtron, or is training your eyes enough?

i'm on an objective roast level. Agtron's the most, but the price is. you know.

The question I did was:
- Actually you need Agtron because it makes a real difference, or more like "nice to have" for peace of mind?
- Is there a cheaper alternative that would be rather accurate?
- If my scale is still small, worth it ain't investing that?

Because all I've been feeling is that I can do light / medium / dark visually and taste, but for the consistency between batches I still shake sometimes. Monday batches can be different from Thursday batches when the profile is the same.

if the scale is 20kg / week and it's already visual, honestly, That's charge temp control, set bean moisture, same consistency Zcharge temp each batch. If it hadn't been locked down, even Agtron's would still be rocking.

charge temp I'm pretty consistent, though, 200C always. My motive has never measured it.

there's a cheaper alternative: the Lighttells ZZC001Z-100. The price is far below Agron, but the reacts are quite reliable on a scale of small rostery. The correlation to Agtron scale is not 1: 1, but if you're consistent with using the same device, you can create your own reference chart.

i bought it from the store, the import seller. It was about 3.5-4 million. Now it might be different. try search "lighttells coffee color meter" or check for group FB Zroaster ID.

if I think that's more important than a tool: you're visual consistency. It means: always look at samples in the same lighting state, thin layer of seeds in the same sample tray, sample cooling time before judging. A lot of good roaster that doesn't have agtrons at all but is consistent because SOP is visual.

agree to Ulfa. I don't have any tools, just using the color reference seeds that I simpen in the little jar of every roast level. So every batch of me is as cool as that physical reference. murmer and surpersonal works.

if money exists and you want a scale up business, just buy an Agtron. But if it's small and budget is limited, first prioritize to roasting process control itself. The good stuff in the hands is still messy.
