supply chain meeting between farmers, roaster, the importer can be unlocked. What?

direct sourcing specialty coffee in the US is already about 15-20% of total speciality imports based on SCA 2022 data. The rest is still traditional broker chain. But that 15-20% is disproportionate representing the most premium lot.

From my experience in the field: when there's an alignment of genuine between farmers, importers, and roaster, there's information flowing much better. Farmers know the taste of end buyer, roaster know farmers constraints about processes and capacity. The result of that lot is deliberate more to the point.

Which must never be forgotten: the real supply chain collab requires a two-way commitment. The roaster which suddenly cancel order because the price changed it undermines the belief of farmers who adjust production planning. Collaborate isn't one-way advantage.

agar. never invest in time and transport for the farmer's visit, build a relationship, then fit the season harvest they get better offers than other traders and lot that we wait sold to elsewhere. it hurts, but we also have to evaluate whether the commitment from our side is clear enough.

transparent pricing is an element that is often forgotten in supply chain collab. if the farmers don't know the price of an end save, they can't evaluate whether they get fair reporting. that knowledge gap is often manipulated in traditional chains.

this is what makes the direct trade model compelling not only about quality but about structural damage. the transparency price was prerequisite for the genuine collection, not luxury.

technology can help supply chain transparency. Some platforms are already starting to capture the farm-to@-@ cup data. Clorofile itself has a logging framework that if optimized it could be a meaningful traceability layer.

still the biggest obstacle in Indonesia: small farmers don't have leverage for negotiation. They need an aggregator who's genetically represented their interest, not just a collect margin. It's a structural problem that supply chain collab alone can't fully solve.

at least the supply chain collab that tight can reduce waste. If roaster knows exactly the time of harvest and processing, they can plan better about when the order, what the volume, what the spec wants. It was real value before it even got to the price fairy.
