WCR is proof that research collection could work on an industrial scale

World Coffee Research is a model I respect. Over 200 membered companies, annual budget $12 million over 2022, and those who fund research for new varietal development, climate adaptation, and resise resistance.

It's contradictory: many Zroaster specialty who sell coffee with the tagline "extraordinary variety" or "rare cultivar" but don't know or don't want to know that some of those values are the result of the research that's collectively generated by the WCR.

Which makes me wonder: how big an Indonesian contribution to research collaboration like this? We're one of the biggest originals but participation to the collective research is still very low. And there's no similar model growing locally between farm, researcher, and brand?

we have ICCRI as a national research agency, but his collaboration with private sector and specialty brand is still very limited. More moving in agronomy and pest management for insulation scale.

public-private research collaboration in Indonesian coffee is different than anything on a global WCR network. Not that it's nothing at all, but the structural gap between the researchers at the university / ICCRI and the real needs of the specialty industry is quite large.

i once talked to a farmer at Aceh who teamed up with a team from one of the local universities to document microclimates and affected it into a cup profile. It's perfectly informal, but the results are interesting. documented knowledge is valuable to all parties.

informal models such as mentioned are more often applied to Indonesian conditions. MOU's formal and institutional research are long processes. The newledge exchange director between the researcher and the farmer was more agile.

from the agronomi side, one thing I saw was urgent in Indonesia: research on the climate change effect to local variables such as Lintong, Mandheling, and Coffee Lanang. Most of these varieties aren't genetically characterized yet.

i'm in general about the research, but if the specialty brand wants to fund research into the farmers directly, is there any clear legal framework or is this still grey area?
