direct trade is realistic not for medium-middle Roastery in Indonesia?

many promote direct trade as the holy grail of speciality sourcing. Full transparency, fair prices to the farmer, stronger story to marketing.

But from what I'm trying to research: to buy directly to farm in Ethiopia or Colombia, the minimum volume they're asking for is usually 1 -5 bags (60kg per bag) per lot, plus survey costs to origin, legal documentation, custom clearance.

For the roadry that buys 200-500kg per month, it's heavy. Even though the good local importer has curated well and the price has come to all costs.

Has anyone tried to direct a trade or a micro-direct and can you tell me the experience?

once tried direct trade for one original. The cost of survey and legal doctoration was first inquisition. New BEP on purchase to -3 or to -4 because early overhead is already amortized. not suitable for a small volume.

there's a mostly deleted middle path: purchases from importers that have direct relations and transparent about their sourcems. a lot of local importers right now can give a lot of information to the farm level. that's enough for an authentic marketing story.

this is what i started from. an importer who wants to share full traceability info. more practical and relative can evolve to direct sourcing if volume is already supported.

for the origin of Indonesia, direct trade to local farmers is more accessible because there is no import barrier. The challenge: lot consistency and minimum volume they can provide per season.

direct trade isn't always cheaper. sometimes it's more expensive than an importer because there's additional operational costs. worth it if it's traceability and chain of custom it's genuinely add value to brand, not just marketing claim.

there's a social impact that genuine from direct trade that can't be replaced as well as any importer. if it's the core identity brand, the investment could be juicy from the angle.

the most realistic possible join cooperative buying the same some other roastry to reach minimum lot size and split cost. has anyone tried this model?
