automation in a mid-sized roastery: when does it start to make sense?

speaking of automation in roastion: from simple ones like conveyor loading, auto destination, to optical sorter. It all has the rouls, but it also has minimum scale to make financial sense.

The question I'm looking for answers: What volume does that automation start to worth? Any real data or real experience on his period payback?

context: my roadry is now at 800kg per month, planning up to 1.5 tons in the next 12 months.

from what I've learned, the automation level entry is starting to make sense at 500kg + per month. The optical sorter of Buhler class or Satake is another story, it takes a volume of 2-3 tons a month to get his period payback under three years.

i'm more focused on the internal process automation before hardware: standard digital checklist, remoder maintenance, tracking lot automatic. low charges but impact to insufficient consistency.

it's a different perspective. automatic software first, hardware later. makes sense.

it also depends very much on how much lab savings could cost. In Indonesia with current level wage, payback period automation hardware can be longer than in countries with high cost labs. Commencing from local conditions, do not use overseas benchmarks directly.

passed on frequently: maintenance costs and spare parts automation equipments. some brands can hardly spare local parts, this goes into the total cost of ownership that must be calculated.

additions: training operators are also cost arabic. complex automation requires special skills and if a resign operator, replacement cost is higher.

if it's still 800kg per month i suggest that you don't rush into hardware automation first. optimize human workflowers first, only when it hits new hardware investment.
