traceability in processing: how far is the buyer now asking for this detail?

this topic is getting critical in my position as sourcing that's teamed up with roastries in some countries.

two Now the bar is up. There's a buyer asking:
- Lalide / Longitude garden block
- The name of an individual farmer or a farmer ID.
- date of specific harvest and harvest methods.
fermentation documentation: Time start, time complete, temperature average.
- drying duration and infrastructure.
- moisture content final before delivery
- who did the cupping and score breakdown per attribute

tools currently used in varied fields. There are still manual spreadsheets,

IBM Food Trust with blockchain is also implemented in some of the coffee supply, although still more common on a large scale.

Question on the side of production: how ready is the documentation capacity on the ground to meet this transparency level? And has anyone been implementing digital traceability from the garden?

from the production side of the mid-scale garden, the most challenging was not the will for documents but the capacity of human resources to consistently do so. the farmers or staff on that field are loaded with physical work. have them add digital documentation on top of that. it requires training, and the genuinelly system does not increase the workload significantly. if the system was complex, it wouldn't be viable.

in the field I coordinated with some farm groups on Flores and NTT that succeeded in implementing his basic traceability implementation that used his system as simply as possible: forms on paper that were already preprinted with fields that needed to be filled, scanned or photographed daily, uploaded to shared folders. not glamorous but consistent. Who tried the high-end app system which abandon in the middle of the street because connectivity issue or deviation was damaged.

the QR code traceability thing called, from the consumer experience side it's interesting but implementation from tip to end it requires a fixer investment. often occurs: QR code is in the bag but the data behind it is minimal or is already outdated because it is not updated. The sophisticated buyer knows how to verify this and they're not impressed with the QR whose data is unsubstantial.

it's a real concert. the shallow traceability that doesn't exist can counter-productive because the buyer feels menage with the system but eventually can't get information that is meaningful. better simple but accurate and consistent than impressive system but data is either empty or not reliable.

from the final customer perspective that buys a retail, sometimes the QR code in the coffee bag is interesting when it's scanned in the content of the garden, the farmer's photo, and a short story. It doesn't have to be complete technical data. There's been a significant emotional connection effect on consumer experience.

it's different. the consumer-facing traceability is different from buyer- facing traceability. the consumer wants: story, photo, emotional connection. which professional buyer wants: data, documentation, verification. both have a value but a different audience. ideally built systems can serve both but a different layer.
