since the last few years of shopping for home breathing equipments has gone up in flames. who used to be just pour over and frinch press has now gone to espresso manual liver, grinder flat burr seriously, even automatic pressure profiling espresso that costs millions for home user

the question that came to my head: is this trend good for the whole coffee industry? the person who invested in the home setup was it less often to go to the cafe? or is it more editable and customeres more deidant and loyal?

from its own experience, it has a good home setup that has made more frequent to the cafe! But the goal has changed: no longer looking for caffeine fix, but looking for something that I can't replicate at home, a new experience, a roast that has never been tried, the same interaction barista that can recommend something.

i was originally excited to buy a nice equipments, but it took me months before my espresso was consistent. it's a long study. now appreciate a barista that can pull consistently shot hundreds of times a day with many variables changing constantly

i bought a pretty serious grinder during the pandemic. now, honestly, it's less often to go out for morning coffee. but the weekend stays at the cafe to relax, not just the coffee. so from the ways of the cafe, the impact may be on the frequency of the weekday visit is decreasing but the quality of visit is increasing.

there's a positive side: home barista enthusiast. It's a nice green bean consumer. They bought specialty roasted beans straight from the Roastry, not from the minimarket. It's a revenue stream direct and margin@@.

alert: there is a gap between equipments capacity and user skills. buy a pressure profiling espresso machine without enough skills to dial it in. that's disappointing experience. the flood of complaints on online forums about espresso in a shitty house is that the routcause is often in skill gap, not in equipments.

the coffee industry overall benefited: more consumer-literate, more preciate specialty, more willing to pay premium. looking at the ecosystem perspective, home barista boom is expanding the consumer base for quality coffee.
