scale up to the big capacity machine. that bottleneck is operational. where exactly?

there's often an assumption that scale up is enough to buy a bigger machine. Buy 30 kg instead of 5kg, direct output 6x fold, business is over.

practice in different fields. I once helped set the Roaster up from 10kg to 60kg. unthinkable bottleneck:

green bean sourcing. To run a 60kg machine at optimal capacity requires a much larger supply of seeds. Lot 60kg exhausted in a few batches only.

two: chaff and waste management. The volume chaff produced by the large machine could overgrow the disposal system designed for smaller scales.

three: electric and gas infrastructure. Need to upgrade the lines of gas and power, permission, contractor fee, time.

Anyone have experience scale up and can share. What's the most unexpected?

it's often forgotten by cooling capacity. 60kg engine needs cooling drums that handle 60kg hot seeds at once. If the air cooling is normal, the time is long-term and it's hard to hit target cooling rate for light Zroast which needs rapid cooldown.

from field experience, the most underestimated is the Roastmaster skills. roast 5kg it's a skill set, roast 60kg it sets differently than the timing side, feeling, and reading machine. Not all good roadmasters at 5kg automatic are good at 60kg.

that vent is also major. the smoke from the batch is much larger and the ductwork is accost for 5kg definitely not enough. need a recalculating from the beginning, and that means physical renovations.

i think all those problems can be anticipated that due to a good schedule before buying. request full spec of vendor, compute infrastructure request, consult with electric engineer. not an unpredictable problem.

agree to some, but some things are not entirely predictable: how green bean supplier reacts when you suddenly demand 10x volume more. Some suppliers can't accommodate it without a long advance notice.

cash flow is one of the most surprising. Big batch means the working capital of the capital for a much larger seed stock. If the payback terms of the buyer are still NET 30-60, there's a gap that can be difficult.

from the side of business and environmental permits: machines above certain capacity may require additional environmental permits due to emissions and noise. it's often not in the checklist made during planning scale up.
