full traceability in the coffee supply. is that realistic?

much brand is now nempel QR code in packaging and claims "100% tracable farm to cup." But when checked, the only thing that can be verified is that it's usually up to a cooperative level or a mill, not an individual farmer.

Less than 5% of global coffee trade now has a full chain of traceability that can be verified independently. It's a very small number of blockchain and digital traceability initiatives coming into the market.

The problem is: that little farmer doesn't have a smartphone or digital system access to data input. And if it's a manual implant of aggregator, the accurate data accuracy.

Who's already implicated or tried the traceability system, like what?

the most workable now is the lot@-@ based traceability system, not individual farmers. one lot can be traced to regions, operatives, processes. that's enough meaningful for most of the buyers and don't need the crazy infrastructure at the farm level.

the blockchain is often sold as a magical solution to traceability. But the fundamental problem is not in the data storage technology, but in whoever input the data at the starting point. If input from a cooperative who has a conflict of interest, blockchain can still store the wrong data cleanly.

this is the least discussed. blockchain makes fake immutable data all the same. independent verification at the entry point is crucial.

from the consumer side, they don't need to know the technical details for appreciate transparency. The QR code that connects to the cooperative story of the genuine is enough for most of the market specialty. Perfect traceability is a long-term goal.

there are more accessible tools now. Clorofile itself has a batch logging system that can be the starting point of traceability from the Zroaster side. Combined with data from a detailed exporter, the cover could be quite comprehensive.

if the destination market is a European specialty-to-have, regulatory retrieval makes traceability tighter, especially with EUDR so it's no longer nice@@.

was there anything noticed that some of the traceability initiative was more benefit to marketing than to the farmer himself? Small farmers still don't get much more because there's QR codes in packaging downstream.
