QR code on coffee packaging connected to farmer's data, is this effective or just marketing?

start paying attention to a lot of special class Roastery that now puts QR codes in his package. Discan, there are data farms: farmers, height gardens, processes used, even garden photos.

This looks good on the transparency side. But I'm starting to wonder, did the farmer himself get a real benefit from this traceability system? Or more of a marketing device for his Roasteryl alone?

Anyone involved directly in his supply chain side of the farm and have a perspective from there?

from the side of the farm that I knew directly at Gogo, the variety of results depends on who made that system. There's a partnership who's genetically shared data and a love premium price that's transparent to farmers. There are also people who only take photos and stories for marketing, and the farmers get the same price as always, and sometimes even less than expectations.

it's hard in the field. little farmers often have no leverage for negotiation. middleman or operative has a larger bargain power. traceability system can be powerful if it gives information to end consumer about a truly paid premium, not just a beautiful story.

it needs to be done direct trade with fair trade and with just a narc QR code. The fair trade is certified with a minimum price floor ($1.40 / lb Arabica), there's a third party verification. The direct trade is not standard standard, it can be very good it can be just a label. QR code traceability is a tool, not an ethical guarantee.

the serious rodeo about this can usually tell us the details of the price structure: If they don't want to be transparent about it, the QR codes in the package are dubious. Good story with bad economics it's not ethical sourcing its genuine.

there are initiatives like blockchain-based traceability that are indeed some of the great international roastry trying to implement. the technology allows every hand that's holding a lot to be recorded with a timestamp and conditions. but the implementation is still expensive and requires digital literacy from all actors in chain.

which is a concern: if too many overheads in the traceability system but no significant premium price to farmers, the cost of that system is finally eaten from the margin farmers as well. technology must be balanced with economic justice, not just transparency theater.
