QR code traceability on green bean bags — is this actually useful or just branding

recently more and more green bean bags coming to me have QR code printed on the bag. suppliers say it is for traceability, you can scan and see farm information, altitude, variety, processing date.

I scan maybe 10 different bags from different importers over past few months and the quality of information was very different. some show very detailed: specific farm coordinate, name of farmer, photo of drying bed, cupping score from exporter. but some show only very basic information that I think I already know from the tag on the bag itself.

from roaster side I am not sure how useful this actually is in practical work. I want to know processing detail, moisture level when shipped, screen size, defect rate. but most QR code pages do not have this.

is traceability tool like this becoming standard now? and do any of you actually use information from QR code to make decision about roasting or buying?

in Thailand we start to see this on some export lot. the QR code system is pushed by some certification body for premium market. from buyer side I hear mixed feedback. roasters in Japan and Korea say they appreciate detail data because it help them explain origin to end customer. but the data entry is usually done by exporter not by farmer, so accuracy depend on how careful exporter is when they fill the form.

for small farmer this is expensive to implement. most farmer not have smartphone or understand how to upload data to system. so QR code data is filled by exporter or trader, not by actual farmer. I question how accurate this really is.

this is very valid point. if farmer cannot input data themselves then traceability is actually record of exporter knowledge about farm, not from farm itself. it become more like documentation than real transparency.

i think this is useful but the data must be accurate. in my experience some importer already use this and the information is quite detail, include the farmer name and processing method. but i agree sometimes the data feel like just for show, because not all information is update regularly and some page already expire when i try to scan.

from importer side the cost to set up and maintain QR traceability system is not small. we actually looked into this last year. the challenge is not technology, most farmers now have phone. the challenge is getting consistent data entry across many smallholder farms. for large estate or cooperative it is manageable but for individual smallholder with one or two hectare it is hard to sustain long term without dedicated field coordinator.

traceability become important in Chinese market also now. big coffee retailer start require documentation and some require QR code per bag. trend is real and will continue. but standard is not uniform yet, each importer use different system and data format is different. better if there is one industry standard so all data can be read the same way.

for me the most important information that i want to see in traceability is moisture content when bean leave origin country and also defect percentage. because those two thing directly affect quality when i receive. but most QR code system not include this. they more focus on the story and the photo, which is good for marketing but not very useful for technical evaluation like what i need.

useful for marketing to end customer. not so useful for technical roasting decision. both can be true at same time.
